RH9 boot messages

Hello all,

I installed RH9 no problems, but when I boot it up, or shut it down I don't get any messages as I know I should. When I boot it up I get some message that ends with "Uncompressing Linux...Ok, booting kernel" and nothing changes until X starts up. When I shut down I get a black screen when I shutdown. I know that I could go find these and its not a big deal, but I would like to have something to watch when the computer boots.

Thanks

I'm just guessing as I got rid of redhat for suse, but can you press F3 or something for verbose output?

My guess: Framebuffer problems.
Exactly this happens if you have a non-compatible framebuffer mode specified in your grub/lilo configuration.

Ok, F3 and Ctrl+Alt+F1-F12 don't do anything during boot, but after it has finsihed booting I can get back to the screen I see during boot with Ctrl+Alt+F1-F6 and F8-F12. Ctrl+Alt+F1-F7 gets me back to X.

So about the framebuffer, I found a grub folder in boot (I use grub) and it has a file called menu.lst. This looks like the closest to a config file that I have found, but it has nothing involving framebuffers. It looks like the same file is also in /etc/grub.conf Where can I find that framebuffer stuff?

In Redhat, menu.lst is usually just a symlink to grub.conf, which is why they "look" identical.

Can you post the line from that file which starts with "kernel"?

(BTW- F2 is the key which gets you into verbose mode at boot. I don't know if that applies to all distros/versions, though)

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.20-8 ro root=LABEL=/

The F2 doesn't do anything either, guess it doesn't apply to RH9.

The default setting for grub is to not display boot messages. At the end of your kernel line in grub.conf, try putting the following:

splash=verbose

Thanks for your help, but no dice. This is the new line:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.20-8 ro root=LABEL=/ splash=verbose

It is still doing the same thing as before.

Mmm... crap.

Sorry- I've no other suggestions at the moment, but if something comes to mind I'll post it.
