RH7.2 puts i686 kernel on Athlon?

RH7.2 installs apparantly normally on a MSI K7T266 Pro2-RU (VIA Apollo KT266A chipset) with Athlon processor but then
the login message shows kernel installed as '2.4.7-10 on an i686' rather than 'on an athlon' which I imagine it should say if it had installed the athlon-optimized version. 'dmesg | less' shows that the boot process does correctly identify the processor as an athlon.
Does anyone know whether this is:-
a) mistaken/misleading message - the athlon kernel could be installed? - if so, is there any other way of checking?
b) wrong kernel gets installed for some reason?
c) there is a good reason why the i686 kernel is best on some athlons?
I need to update and recompile the kernel, partly in attempt to overcome the VIA SouthBridge and USB problems, but I'm not sure which kernel to go for: i686 or athlon?

Thanks
Mike

athlon IS an i686 cpu, that's the right kernel. If you compile your kernel then you can specify it to optimise for athlon, but it is always recogniesed as an i686 standard cpu

But i686 is not necessarily athlon!

Obviously theres a difference between the i686 and athlon Red Hat kernel compilations, the questions are:-

1. Which is best for a 1.1GHz Athlon 200FSB in an MSI K7T266 Pro2-RU motherboard?

2. Is there any way to confirm which version is installed if the login message says i686 for both?

Regards Mike

the athlon kernel is still on an i686, it's just optimised for athlon, my kernel is athlon opt, but uname still says i686.

which is best.. well athlon optimized is preferable. if you can tell the difference. command.. well no, it's just the few very subtle changers in the code. check the config file for the kernel to see
