RH 8 login problem

Hi all !!

Anyone know how to configure login under rh 8, i am trying to login under my regular user after I rebooted but it brings up a strange dialog box after I type in username and pass saying system bootup in progress ... and then it does not recognize my username and pass and only lets me in a session as root.
Looked at /etc/passw and /etc/shadow my regular username is still there with encrypted passsword and everything.. Anyone know how to get my user back and possibly get rid of that dialog box???
Thanks a lot everyone!!!

37 posts (quite a lot),anyway if you were browsing this forum or had tried
http://google.com/linux you could have got your answers.
If you are using runlevel 5(that's the level(or startup process) which takes you directly to the X
server, that's GUI),you could try changing that to runlevel 3(multi user, text startup)
to do that ,edit
/etc/inittab
in this line
Quote:
# Default runlevel.
id:5:initdefault:
Change the 5 into 3 ,do not do anything else
Incorrectly editing the file may result in a unloggable system
now reboot the system and you get the text mode
login through your account and do startx

Thx for the reply rch but I did search around and that was one of the first things I tried but text mode login did not help much .. it gives the same thing only this time as a text message instead of a dialogue box :

system bootup in process.... please wait
invalid username or password

There is a script somewhere from which the login reads and then it defaults to root only which I have no idea why - but if u know of something else I can try pls post it ...
As far as the number of posts - most of those are replies to other people who responded to me just like this one!

ok now check the /etc/passwd file and see if the user you created is there
the format of the user account in the file is
(substitute your username in the user fields below)
user:x:X:Y:user:/home/user:/bin/bash
now if it is there you have to change your password ( i am assuming that you created your account through adduser command)
the command is
passwd user
after that you should be able to login
