result.o file : impossible to read

hi everybody,

i just received a file result.o which is supposed to be a trace of a mobile communication. I need to analyze it but don't know how to.

I think this kind of file is somehow related to objects in C but i don't have more clue as i'm not an expert in C.

Could anyone help how to read the file ?

Thanks a lot

Cheers

Hi,

What utility created the file? How was the utility supposed to create the file, as a binary or a text file?

If the utility was supposed to create a binary file, then without understanding the internal format of the file you won't really be able to decode what the data is trying to tell you.

However, as a simple answer for you, you could always download a good hex editor and display the binary contents. I use a program called "hexedit" when I want to examine raw binary data files. You can google for it on the internet and download/install.

thanks for the answer rstewart, i'll try the hexedit

as for your question i have no idea what utility created the file. I just received it as is. I assume this was done on a Solaris environment but that's not really accurate.

if anybody has any idea about the definition of such a file or a trick to read it i take it !

cheers

What does "file result.o" (without the quotes) return? From the .o extension it does indeed sound like an object file, but running the "file" command should be able to tell you or not.
