Rep: Reputation: Disabled
restrained packages

Hiho,
I am using Debian/testing. I wanted to update my system with
Code:
aptitude update
aptitude upgrade
, but there are plenty of packages restrained, eg the current X-Server. Is there a way to find out which installed packages avoid the new packages to be installed? I want to install those new packages, so maybe I remove the avoiding ones...

Thx

The first thing I would try is aptitude dist-upgrade. Sometimes that will upgrade some of the stubborn packages.

man apt-cache. You can look up reverse dependencies by doing apt-cache rdepends packagename (I'm not in front of my linux box, but google turned up a page that says it should be apt-cache whatdepends, so check your man page). I'm sure there's a clever way you could script it together to grep the output of dpkg --get-selections and see if any are installed.
