Question Restoring Default KDE Menus

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
Hello all,

I was customising my Linux install today, when I accidentally removed some items from my KDE menu. I tried to merge the System Tools and System whatever-it-is folder into a new folder called System, and in the process I lost the contents of the original folders. Is there any way to restore the default KDE menu items? I tried restarting the session and that didn't work.

Any advice greatly appreciated. I need my system tools .

Cheers

Damnit, 45 minutes of trying and I find a solution 5 minutes after I post .

Turns out the items I had were just HIDDEN, not deleted. When I selected "Show Hidden Items" in KDE Menu Editor the things came back. I had to go through and re-add each item though.

Which brings me to a new question:
- How do I delete those things permanately, and how do I bring them back if I change my mind?

Thanks again for any help.

Cheers

Try to delete (or better rename) the .kde folder in your homedirectory. You will then get the default settings on the next session. I am not working on Linux roght now, so I can't tell you which file it is in detail, but if you've freshly set up your system, you probably won't loose too many settings if you delete all.

EDIT: You were too fast to find the solution yourself

I guess as a normal user, you cannot delete the default settings, just hide them. The defaults should be located in /opt/kde3/share/config, your custom settings in a similar path in your home directory (/home/user/.kde/share/config), but I am not sure about that (see above).
