Resolution Changing
 

Hey, IM running Mandrake 9.1 and I want to change my resolution. When I go to the Mandrake control center, and then hardware, and then change resolution, and select the 1024 res, it tells me i have to log out and back in. I do that, and it is still 800x600. Is there another way to change it, like, through a terminal?

For that,I think you have to edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config file.

look in the /etc/X11/XF86Config file down to a section called "Screen Sections" and it's pretty much self explanitory from there, switch around which modes you want, and comment out the ones your not gonna use, then you can use the numpad + to flip through them i think.

Well, I did that, and it didnt work. It didnt log me in graphically, I had to go back to the regular file. Someone please explain this in a matter a newbie can understand.

I want 1024 resolution, I am currently on 800x600. Im running Mandrake 9.1. And remember, im a newb...

you should edit your XF86Config file and then start X server again.your system will go for the best resolution possible(among those given in XF86Config).Check /var/log/XFree.0.log to see what has happened.

Sorry, I don't understand. Maybe i'll just stick with yucky 800x600. And if you want some tips on trying to explain it, think of teaching a toddler how to use the toilet. Step by step.

If any of you have the patience to do that, it would be greatly appreciated, and I will try my hardest to help you with *anything* you may need.

I tried editing it again. When I do it, it won't graphically login, I had to put the original file back.
