Request for Information - wrt unique File Format type


Currently setup with a dual boot Linux and Windows System.

Newbie to linux and also first post on LinuxQuestions.org forum, so please excuse any lack of correct terminology.

Previously in my search of different Linux distributions, had come accross a unique file package format.

Unforunately lost the link to the particular website was lost when my Internet Explorer favorites were not saved, (yes I known BackUp what you want to keep).

The file format, which I will call "xxx" was another file format like "deb" or "rpm", but it packaged all files, (programs, libraries, dependencies, etc) all into just one file.

The contents of an "xxx" file could then be loaded into just one directory and could be executed self contained from this one directory.

If you are aware of file format "xxx", would appreciate some info and or link to the website.

erm.. a .bin maybe?? that's kinda the closest thing to a setup.exe windows type thing... these are not convetional files though, and just used by companies like Sun with java to cover all the bases.
