repquota (and edquota) report incorrect "used" blocks/inodes..

Repquota says there are twice as many files as there actually are.

This originally started when I overwrote the /aquota.user file with a copy from another machine (mimicing a situation from a production machine). I've tried almost everything[1] I can think of in order to get quota working again, but can't seem to find something that will make quota report the correct information!!

Hitting the disk really hard (physically) or reformatting isn't an option at this point because it's located at a remote location. I guess I could actually
reformat the machine remotely.. hmm..

/etc/fstab:

----
LABEL=/ / ext3 defaults,usrquota 1 1
#LABEL=/ / ext3 defaults 1 1
LABEL=/boot /boot ext3 defaults 1 2
none /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
/dev/hda3 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,owner,kudzu 0 0
----

test2|15:48|~|# repquota / | grep atr
atr -- 96 0 0 24 0 0
test2|16:23|~|# find / -xdev -user atr -ls | wc -l
12
test2|16:24|~|#

repquota originally reported correct stats for atr and for #<atr's uid>.
After running quotacheck, the stats you see above started coming out..

Any ideas?

Where in Sam Hill's name is quota getting the stat info from?

Thanks in advance,
Marco

(btw, any ideas for syncing quotas between to cluster nodes that have local (identically formatted/sized) filesystems will be very appreciated!! copying /aquota.user didn't work out all that well.. 8)

[1]
quotaoff -v / ; quotacheck -anmvu; quotaon -v /;
quotaoff -v / ; quotacheck -anmvu -Fvfsv0; quotaon -v /;

I've even tried
quotaoff -v /
rm /aquota.user;
perl -pi -e 's/,usrquota//' /etc/fstab
shutdown -r now
rm -f /aquota.user
perl -pi -e 'if( /^LABEL=\/\s/ ) { s/defaults/defaults,usrquota / }' /etc/fstab
# do the quotacheck hack in rc.sysinit
shutdown -r now
quotaon -v /
with no luck..
