Replacing HDD in an LVM without any ports left for new HDD, therefor using a USB dock

I have 3 HDDs in an LVM, and I want to replace one of the HDD with a new one I just bought. But I don't have any SATA ports left. I have a USB Dock for the HDD. I was wondering if I could format the HDD on the USB Dock for LVM, transfer all the data there, and then remove the old HDD, and stick the new one inside the PC?
