Replacing a linux server.
 

Ok here's the situation. I have a Fedora Core 2 server that we believe has been comprimised. I have another box with Fedora Core 4 installed. I need to migrate all my websites, e-mail users and e-mail to the new box. What's the best way to do this? There's probably 20-30 GB of data on the comprimised server.

You're moving comprimised files to an umcomprimised server?!!

Well, actually I guess you should be fine as long as they're just data files. You got anything against opening your 'comprimised' server, taking out the harddrive and putting it in your uncomprimised server? That would be the quickest and safest way.

If your doing this over a network, rsync works wonders.

Depending on the type and scope of the compromise I would be inclined to agree with slantoflight. Okay, I know that you need those file to do business. I would seek a way to reduce the risk of moving bad files onto the server. Do you have a backup from before the compromise? If so you could use that to restore files, then you would just have to copy files that have changed since the backup to the new server.

Hopefully you will have some method of assuring yourself that the files that have changed since the backup are still okay to use.

It is only data files that I'll be transferring. I'm not 100% sure that the server is comprimised, since I can't find any evidence that it is, but it has done some strange things, so I'd rather replace it than leave it like it is.
