remove icons from gnome desktop?

Is there any way to remove those awful icons (computer, home, and wastebasket) from the gnome desktop?

Use gconf-editor. Might be listed as Configuration Editor in the gnome, system tools menu.

apps > nautilus > desktop

Remove the check marks for each icon...

If you want to disable icon support all together...

apps > nautilus > preferences

Remove the check mark from "Show Desktop".
