Remote Desktoping

Hello.

I have a basic Red Hat 9 server which is set up with a few samba shares.

I want to be able to Remote Desktop to the Red Hat 9 server from both Windows clients, and also Red Hat 9 clients.

The server is running X and GNOME, but I would like it if I could view both the GUI and the terminal (if possible).

What is the easiest way for me to set this up?

Thanks alot,
Craig

vnc would work, www.realvnc.com
since you are serving from a linux box, you can run 2 vnc desktops (one for each client)
or you could try an X server for windows, such as mi/x, that's a better sollution in my mind, but that's not free

Thanks alot for your replys.

tangle, that is what I was thinking about doing, however I don't actually know how to do it, is there much to it? If I set up forwarding X over ssh, that could be used for Linux clients and Win clients?

Do you know of any good sites that you can point me to so I can read up on how to do it?

Thanks very much.

Check your /etc/ssh/sshd_config file and see if it says fowardx = no, if it does uncomment it. You should be able to forward x to a client.

Also check out The Linux Terminal Server Prodject (ltsp). I used that too at home for a little while and it worked really well. There is some downloading to do, though.

Hi.

I can't see any 'forwardx = no' at all in the /etc/ssh/sshd_config file.

Can I just add it in?

If yes, and I can add it in, then ssh to the machine, will it automatically send x through to the terminal? Or will I have to set something else up?

Sorry bout all the questions. I really appreciate your help.

No do not add it. That statement tell ssh not to foward X. Just connect to the PC running ssh and once logged in type startx.

Hi again, Sorry....

I'm a bit confused with this... This is what I did, and what I got.... I ssh'd into my server (which is already in the gui).

[root@chapsd root]# ssh 10.113.10.23
root@10.113.10.23's password:
Last login: Thu Oct 9 11:05:16 2003 from root
[root@bigred root]# startx
Using authority file /root/.Xauthority
Writing authority file /root/.Xauthority
Using authority file /root/.Xauthority
Writing authority file /root/.Xauthority

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again.

When reporting a problem related to a server crash, please send
the full server output, not just the last messages.
Please report problems to xfree86@xfree86.org.

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key
giving up.
xinit: unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.
[root@bigred root]#

Do I need to jump out of the gui on the server ?

Sorry for the questions again.

Try logging in as a user other that the one that is logged in on the machine that you are logging in on.

Hope that sounded right, it is getting late.
