reinstall of mandrake wont work.

i had mandrake 9.0 on a win/linux hard drive that kept loosing video so i tried to reinstall.

when i try to install the process only takes a couple of minutes and then after i go through the setup process the machine boots into text mode. it also never give me the option to set up the moniter.

i deleted the linux partition and formatted "D" with fdisk and then had mandrake install too fast again.

for some reason the install is using my origional install info and i cant change it. i also chjanged video card to see if this was the problem so my origional settings wouldnt work.

also i have no idea of how to get into a graphics mode from a command prompt.

any help is appriciated

pete

just type "startx" at a console prompt. if it is not configured try runnign Xdrake as root.

From what I can decode from your message you have a problem getting a graphical install in mandrake.

What is your video card?

i dont always put things like i should.

i am trying to get a graphical interface in mandrake 9.0.

ive used a 4mb trident, 32mb kasser?, and permedia 2 8mb (this card has worked in prior times with this distro).

i deleted the linux partitions, created a dos drive (d) and wrote about 200mb of files from "c" to "d" in windows and no problems. i then go to install mandrake 9.0. i delete the 3.6 mb "d" fat32 partition and auto allocate the linux partitions. i select the things i want to install and then it says it formats hda5,6,and7. then it installs all the packages in about two minutes. it also never asks me for the cd-2 like it should. it asks me for network info but never asks about video.

it seems its using the orgional install files and repartitioning dosent erase them.

im now giong to erase the entire disk (including windows) and try again.

pete

also with the trident i had redhat 7.1 up and running with all the same hardware

edit

deleted both the windows and linux partitions; auto allocated partitions and the install seems to be going in ok. also burned a new cd-1. (the third) dont know what was at fault but things look good as of now

and thanks for the input

pete
