Regaining Process Control

K, lets say I am SSH'd into a system, and the system I am SSH'ing from is locked, except for the SSH. I would like to restart, but I want to be able to drop the process that is currently running, into the background, and regain the control of that process after a reboot of the SSH client system. I was in the process of blanking a CD, and my win system froze everything except my SSH prog. is there a way to drop the CD burning into the back ground, log off, reboot my win system, log back into the server, and call up that process back into my control?

TIA
Mike.

If it's an unattended operation, the process might continue to live until completion if you kill the SSH. You won't be able to regain control of it though as the tty port will be lost. Maybe there's a log file you can monitor to see if/when the operation finishes.

I will give it a try, but I think the process will just stop, I'll let you know! Thanks for the idea.

I use a nice little program called screen which gives you a sort of virtual console environment. It has many features but my favourite feature is that it keeps running even when you switch to something else or disconnect. I use it to work on stuff from work. And if I lose the connection I can just reconnect and continue just where I left off. Or if the program was running it will keep running in the mean time.

More information here http://www.gnu.org/directory/screen.html

VNC does something similar http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/index.html

It requires a viewer, but runs on almost any platform and fits on a floppy. It's great for managing windoze boxes remotely, but runs just as good for Linux.

Woohoo! That screen program is wicked! Thanks so much, it does exactly what I need! Now I don't have to keep a terminal window open on my windows system! Thanks!
