Redhat linux can't boot up

I rebooted the server and it hangs after the following displays...
creating root device
mounting root filesystem
kjournald starting commit interval 5 second
EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode
freeing unused kernel memory: 224k freed

Before I rebooted the server I tried logging into it by typing root at the login prompt and it displays...
INIT: cannot execute "/sbin/mingetty"
INIT: ID "1" respawning too fast: disable for 5 minutes

If I manage to boot into the server using bootdisk or something, what should I be looking for repair?

Thanks.
