hi,
i'm having some serious issues w/ redhat. i'm new to linux and installed redhat 9 about 5 days ago. everything was going well, i installed gaim, wine, and xfree86 (newest updates in that order). everything was going well until i restarted my system about 2 days ago. it booted as normal and got to the login screen where i entered my root user and password. my computer churned for a second or so then prompted me with a window that says " ", and gives me the options for default/fail safe or cancel. If i choose the default/fail-safe option it just sets me to a blank default background with no options or commands available...
i am able to use 'linux rescue' with the install cd to get to -/bin/sh-2.05b# command prompt but as I am new with linux, i have no idea of any diagnostic tools or possible fixes that i can use from there...
hopefully someone will be able to help me, i'd really appreciate it!!!
uhmm.. is it a terminal that opens or is it jut your background? like can you actually type something into there ?.... try typing "startx" , "xinit" , "startkde" , "gnome-session" etc.... as failsafe mode.. if that doesnt work, just reinstall over it... [reformat tha partition etc etc....]
linux boots and brings me to the redhat login screen, it gives me a window for username: as well as one the bottom the list of language, session, reboot, and shutdown...
i type in root and enter the password and it acts as if it were about to begin... after this a 'session menu' window pops up ... in the area where i should be able to type in a command it says 'chooseSessionListWidget'... there are five options on the bottom of the window: load session, delete session, break lock, default/fail safe, and cancel but everything is grey (cannot choose) other than default/fail safe and cancel...
if i try to click on the text window then it just restarts to the login window... if i press default/fail-safe then it just goes to a blank window that is unresponsive... cancel simply brings me to the login screen as well...
i was hoping not to have to reinstall (if i have to i have to) and i was thinking maybe there is something i can do to change the kernel around?
