Hi,
I have been using Redhat 8 for a while through Vmware in winxp, mainly just to learn linux a little better. But it ran so slow that i decided to install it on a spare drive i had laying around. Installation went smoothly, as did the hardware detection, but it locks up halfway through starting the Xserver (KDE). It gets to "loading the window manager" and freezes. For some reason the caps lock and scroll lock keyboard lights flash at me. I have run Redhat 7.3 and SUSE 8 without any problems, but i dont know enough about linux to troubleshoot this kind of problem.
Can anyone help out?
thanks alot,
scott
My system:
Dual Athlon 1800MP
Asus A7M266D MB
1500MB ECC RAM
Quadro 2 PRO
ATI RAGE 8MB (second monitor)
Soundblaster Live(value)
siig 4 port firewire
NEC usb 2.0 card
SMC1211TX 100MB ethernet
So I tinkered with it for a couple of hours and decided to take the windows approach and re-install RedHat 8 from scratch. Now it locks up right when the redhat splash screen comes up, it doesn't even get to the loading icons. Could it have something to do with the fact that i have two video cards? I have run the redhat-config-xfree86 and selected my other video card, and it loads up on the other monitor but freezes in the same spot.
Don't kno wmuch about linux m8, but have you tried takin the other video card out??? And then if that doesn't fix it, maybe the other cards one by one till it's resolved? Might help someone hlpe you with your trouble shooting if you could tell which piece of h/w is causing the problem.
I used the redhat-config-xfree86 thingy, and changed the video card to Generic VESA compatible, thinking it might help, but no luck. I guess I could take my PCI cards out, one by one, but it's such a hassle. I'm feeling like I should try Mandrake 9.0
