I use RedHat 8.0 on a hp pavilion 443,
my sound card is an Intel 82801DB AC'97
I need to install ALSA driver to have sound working (following ALSA website documentation and also mia.ece.uic.edu/~papers/volans/alsa.html).
I can hear the sounds generated by the gnome environment.
The problem comes when I want to use CD audio.
When I run gnome-cd :
- the correct number of tracks is detected
- the time counter runs
- but I hear no sound ! THAT'S THE PROBLEM !!!!
Once you've installed the alsa-driver, make sure you install the alsa-utils as well. Then open up a command prompt (maximised) and type 'alsamixer'. Unmute the cd audio channel, and increase the volume.
My problem is not resolved, so I add more informations...
- CDROM audio is working with windows, so the hardware connection must be correct.
- I have set volume control with alsamixer, CD channel is not muted and turned up.
- I made some tests with "cdp", and got the same result as with gnome-cd : no sound.
- I start my kernel with the following option "pci=biosirq" (file grub.conf, I need the option for the PCTEL driver)
No, I did not check the CD-ROM / sound card connection. I'd like to update only software.
I understand that to get audio off a CD there are 2 modes :
- analog output, with an audio cable between CD-ROM / sound card
- Digital Audio Extraction, where the digital audio stream is sent from the CD to the CPU
I tried to install xmms 1.2.8-1, which seems to support DAE mode, but I get the following errors :
error : Failed dependencies
libasound.so.2 is needed by xmms-1.2.8-1
libpthread.so.0 (GLIBC-2.3.2) is needed by xmms-1.2.8-1
Did somebody successfully install xmms 1.2.8-1 on redhat 8.0 ?
