Unhappy RED HAT 8 Install nightmare

After a few mid-install crashes I finally got through it. When setting up the monitor I used the same monitor type I used in a previous Suse 8 install (Dell Inspiron 5000e laptop with unknown monitor ) instead of VESA because that wouldn't work with SUSE. Now I can't load GUI and redhat-config-xfree86 trys three times to load and it says "no can do." Any other hints? I just want to find a command line accessible app that will let me change my monitor. Redhat docs seem useless.

Please Help.

email me at bill@greenx.com

Thanks ahead of time.

linux on a 5000e

nope setup doesnt work. Im having the same problem with red hat. It finds the ATI Rage mobility 128 and a screen but it cant find the screen mode. It will ask me for the log on and will blink a couple of times before giving me a error telling me about the screen problem. It also talked about XF86Config. I used pinfo on the file. Im not sure that im doing the right thing there but im a newbi to Linux. i ran setup after reading that last poasting. However it did not have anything to do with the monitor.

So... you cant find any resolutions on your monitor? did you try manually seting up the screen resolution? try 640x480... dont choose GFX install, its best to have a text login because you can then fix any errors in X11 before you actually start X (startx &)
me? i _never_ had a problem with redhat...
