redhat 7.3 runs very very slow on my machine. my pc it a:

toshiba satellite 1805 s274
1.1 ghz, 256 mb ram
trident cyber blade xp/Ai
20 gb hard drive (50% linux, 50% winblows)


when i say slow, i mean slow. ive installed redhat 7.1 on a 486 66 mhz with 32 mb ram, and it runs just like that on my current pc. when browsing the hd, it like a blind man in a library. whe i click the gnome foot icon, its at least 10 seconds before i see the menu. windows move really really slow, and everything just seems slow. terminals are slow, programs take way too long to startup. ive rebuilt my kernel, and it doesnt seem to help. i have also tried hdparm and it also doesnt help.

also, is there a big speed difference in redhat 8 ?

That is really strange. Sounds like something is hogging the memory. Type ps aux at the prompt to see the running processes. That might give you an idea as to what the culprit is.

might i add, it is a FRESH installation
