Recovering Windows user

New to Linux...like it so far
But what about fine tuning...?
As a recovering Windows user, I would like to know a few things that I cannot find in manuals, help, etc.
In Windows, after the clean install goes the inf update.
does it apply to Linux?
How 'bout firewall?
Startup services tweaks?
Disk cache size?
Stuff like that there.

Also I read that Linux has trouble reporting the correct amount of ram?

I have: ASUS P4TE
P4 @2.2 gig
512Mb Rimm
NVidia TNT2
Creative PCI128
Cable modem
