Recovering Lost Data

I accidentally formatted my hard drive a couple of days ago, but found a Windows program which could recover most of the files. Unfortunately, there seems to be a problem with the way it recovered large compressed archive folders. When I click on one of these folders, documents.tar.gz, I am told the file does not exist in Konqueror. Yet Konqueror clearly indicates that the file is there and contains 40 MB of data.

I went to the command line and typed, tar xvf documents.tar.gz

and got the following output:
tar: This does not look like a tar archive
tar: Skipping to next header
tar: Archive contains obsolescent base-64 headers
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

Is there anything I can do to rescue this compressed archive? It has all the files I need to restore my system?

Thanks.

For compressed tar files i.e. tar.gz or tgz

tar -zxvf <filename>

See man pages for additional info.
