recovering a 'ntfs' partition which got ruined by mkfs.ext4 command

I just ruined my /ntfs partition. I used the mkfs command and stopped it by ^C immidiately, but it was too late.

mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdb1

Is there a way to recover NTFS partition now ?

The partition </dev/sdb1> was 'ntfs' and mkfs.ext4 did not check if it was a ext4 or give any pre-check warning, just went ahead with making the ext4 fs on a ntfs partition.

I think you'll need data recovery tools as the fat will be gone
eg. GetDataBack

my intention is to get back the NTFS 'ditectory table' .. whole disk structure back. Recovery tools give you piece meal specific data at a time.

I mean I would want to reverse the damage. Some how, ntfs should read back itself and create back all the directory structure (assuming its somewhere there not lost )

You might want to id the partition as NTFS in fdisk. Then run "ntfsfix". This may mark it so that Windows runs chkdisk on it when it boots up. I don't know how much redundancy there is in the NTFS filesystem, or if too much was deleted for chkdisk to run.

I have same problem here

Did you get any luck on recovering i-nodes?

The partition is flagged NTFS on fdisk
fix doesnt work

I once managed to slice up an ntfs partition with a BSD system and I used Test disk as found on the Parted magic live CD to restore the partition table,however yours. sounds like you have overwritten data on the partition, Ohhh
If there is a way or a tool you might find what you need on either Parted magic live CD or even better the UBCD... good luck.
