why don't you make your computer boot from the cd instead? You change the boot sequence in the BIOS. I usually install my boot loader in the MBR.
Hope this will help you!

red hat 7.2 is very old- perhaps this is your problem. if you don't have the bandwidth to download a newer distro- check out Ubuntu (I'm not affiliated with them) they will ship free CD's anywhere in the world- check out https://shipit.ubuntu.com/ - shipping is free aswell.

Floppies are notorious for dying- it's an old technology.

if you can get in to your computer using a boot floppy or a boot CD, then reinstall lilo.
http://www.faqs.org/docs/Linux-HOWTO...cue-HOWTO.html - or grub- personally, I prefer grub- http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/grub.html

Still There

Dear experts,

how can i re Install my LILO, without installing LINUX again, ...
cuz of some situation, i got to stick to my RED HAT 7.2 , ... not newer versions,

so, will you just let me know, how can i Recover my lost LILO,
(i've got a bootable redhat7.2, i can change the BIOS boot sequence and boot up using that, but this will go through Installing process, which i dont need cuz i already have a Installed linux, i just want a boot image, to boot up that OS... cuz my bootup disk fails everytime i try it)

secondly, i downloaded "Tomsrtbt" its format is .tar.gz , how am i gonna run my linux without lilo ! to unzip+untar the file i have downloaded, i mean , i dont get it,

i have to recover my lilo , for that i need a "Tomsrtbt" , and for that i need to unzip+untar which needs a runing linux ...

can anybody explain a little more to me,
thanks in advance

umm... you just need to get into a linux. does knoppix work on your computer (knoppix is a LiveCD which means that it runs from the CD and does not install)

Tom's Root Boot- http://not.toms.net/twiki/bin/view/Tomsrtbt -you ARE going to have to look up the info you need on your own- the "experts" aren't going to help you any more than I can- you need to help yourself aswell.

That said, these are the steps that I would suggest that you take:
1) get somesort of bootable (not needing installed) Live Distribution. I reccomend knoppix or tomsrtbt (cd and floppy respectivly)

2) google/search online and find out how to repair lilo.

3) open up the linux (running from the CD or floppy- not installed) and install lilo- the links I have given you should be useful.

hope this helps.

looking forward to hear what happens when you try it.

just a quick note- my status is based on the amount of posts I have, not on my knowledge (ok, so the number of posts you make probably indicates that you know SOMETHING- but this is not always the case)

Unhappy Recovering a broken Boot Disk

hello again,

i have tried to install a fresh linux on my pc, removing the older one (the one that its BOOT FLOPPY was not working!)
the same problem happened again!!

i have 2 PCs here(both suppose to have xp and RH7.2 ),since the xp thing, i have to use (lilo, first sector ... that requires a boot disk each time i wanna run my RH), one is working fine with same procedure i use, but the other has problem, which is:

everytime i install the redhat on it, it almost makes the BOOT DISK, so that i can use in order to boot up my system in linux, but, as soon as i want to boot up my sys. using that floppy, it says something like "could not find kernel image."

in brief, i would appreciate if someone helps me to Make a BOOT DISK for each of my systems,

i know how to boot up using rescue mode using my RH install CDs, n stuff ...
i just do not know how can i make A BOOT DISK Myself?? when my floppy is corrupted or not well made in the installation process,
and i know each PC needs an INDIVIDUAL B.Disk, yet they usually have these files:

"boot.img, initrd.img, ldlinux.sys, syslinux.cfg, vmlinuz"

thanks in advance,
saeed144
