Recover files from formatted hard disk

I have heard that some distributions of Linux, such as Knoppix, can be used to recover information from drives that have been formatted and had windows installed. Can anyone tell me how to go about recovering files on a hard drive that has been formatted and had windows installed on it? I know they are there but i have no way to recover them. Any suggestions would be helpful. I know the files are there because i used a windows program to locate lost files that have not been saved over yet i just can't access the files.

hi,

you may try one of the following tools

1. PC INSPECTOR™ File Recovery, Freeware (http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/uk/welcome.htm)

2. Active@ UNERASER, (http://www.uneraser.com/)

3. EasyRecovery™ DataRecovery (http://www.ontrack.com/easyrecoverydatarecovery/)

Good luck

Thanks for the tips. I did check the software you mentioned but it is as expensive or more expensive than the My FIle Recovery program i had a demo of. PCinspector didn't work because it would only scan the part of the partion that had new data since the formatting took place.

Does anyone know if I can use a Linux bix networked to my windows pc to recover data off the remaining part of the partition on the reformatted hard drive? ANymore suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks
