recording help

i'm trying to get into recording with linux, starting with just recording a simple test wav. with the mic plugged in and unmuted in alsamixer, i can hear the sound through the speakers so i guess that is set up right. then i record the wav with the rec command, but there is no sound from the file on playback. i'm not sure where to look next, does anyone have any ideas?

Be sure to have the mic volume turned up or not muted, along with anything else that is related to the volume settings.

all options are unmuted and have volume in alsamixer. the mic is as loud as it can go before feeding back. still nothing. :confused:

Code:

[6] sero:~ $ play check.wav
<pause with no sound>

[7] sero:~ $ mpg321 check.wav

Playing MPEG stream from check.wav ...

edit: i tried it in xmms, too -- no sound there, either. the bar goes across, but no output. thx

>edit2: fixed it with amixer:

# amixer sset Mic Capture cap

the other mixers (alsmixer, gnome-alsamixer) weren't working for capture.
