recompiling kernel messed up pcmcia

I'm currently using 2.4.20-19.9 and i wanted to patch it to use acpi instead of apm. Patching went fine, compiling went fine, and booting went fine EXCEPT the PCMCIA never turned on. I noticed where it usually says "Starting PCMCIA.... Yenta socket" and whatever it usuaully says after that, it just said "Starting PCMCIA [OK]" and my card never turned on. So then I tried to just recompile the kernel without the patch, and that had the same results. I've tried to compile it with PCMCIA built into the kernel and I've tried with it as a module. Anybody think they can help?

Thanks,
Mike
