a plain "L" means Lilo has loaded its 1st stage (mbr) but cant load the 2nd (root/boot partition) stage.
issuing "lilo -t -v" will have lilo (t)esting its config (v)erbose, but not install. now make the changes to /etc/lilo.conf and be sure to add/verify directions to where it can find the stages like. where the bootsector is (in the mbr):
boot=/dev/hda
and where 2nd stage is (partition nr1):
root=/dev/hda1
now test lilo again, and if no errors occur issue "lilo -v" to install lilo with the newer config.
if this doesnt work, general stuff causing errors might be the linear/lba settings in lilo.conf, and/or HD translation in the BIOS, poss. w. PnP-OS settings, IIRC.
oho! Seems you know what you're doing.
I have a question of my own: My Lilo sometimes started to write 10101010101..... on my screen (I think it did write out Lilo-Linux Loader beforehand). Happened to me with both, SuSE6.4 and 7.2
Booting the root partition with the installation CD using start installed system worked fine...
Do you know why this happens and how I can fix it? Up til now, I reinstalled Lilo to get rid of it.
