Re: I can't access Linux root

Recently i reinstalled my Linux. But after the installation is finished when it rebooted i was prompted to type in my username and password. After i type in the root as username and the password which i am sure that i remembered correctly, linux just refreshes the screen and prompt me for to login in again. I don't understand why? since i type in the correct password for my root account, why i still could not enter my file system. Need help asap. Thanks

Boot from a livecd or something and mount the root filesystem.

Edit your /etc/passwd file and make sure that root has something like /bin/bash as login-shell.

THis most likely means you entered a bad password. Boot to a live cd or rescue disk.

First, read /var/log/messages and see what it says. Could possibly be a pam problem.

Second, reset your password just to be shure.

When you say "refresh" what do you mean? If it gives you just another login prompt, than the password is wrong. But if the screen clears, then has a login prompt, that would mean that you are logging in, but for whatever reason the system is closing your session immediately.
