Random program termination - odd
 

I am having some rather curious problems with my installation of Mandrake 8.2. I run it on a secondary computer in my bedroom (with quite old hardware) primarily as a backup server, although I occasionally use it for light desktop duties.

Recently, I have encountered an odd problem: when I start up certain applications (so far OpenOffice.org and Nautillus), they shut themselves down immediatly after being started. I tried stating them from the console, but they produced no error message. I have not to my recollection changed the configuration of either of these programmes since they last worked satisfactorily. The only thing that I have done since then is upgraded the version of Samba that I am running (using urpmi) from 2.2.3a to 2.2.6. Samba works fine now. Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be?

Anything in your log files ??

Which ones in particular?

Possibly /var/log/messages ??

That's a very big file. What in particular am I looking for?
