hello,

The freezes are bad. I can go without an hour or so without a lock-up, but then i can also have 2 or 3 lock-ups within an hour. this was before i pulled the ram out though. now I can't even turn the computer on while the interent cable is hooked up because it gets to the part where in looks for the "eth0" and stops." I'm using my mom's computer because i can't use the net on my own anymore :(

That:

localhost modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-slot-1
localhost modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-service-1-0

seemes to be an error that is common too in the "system log" i don't know if it is causing trouble to or not :(

Thank you for the help so far. I will take out my ethernet card and see how the computer works without it.

*gulp* New Update:

took the ethernet card out yesterday and at first it seemd ok. I played some games with my zsnes emulator which seemd to be ok for most of the day. Then last night around midnight, it freezes again. :( I have to use the power button to turn it off and I wait about a minute and then turn it on. Instead of the normal one beep i get when it starts up, i get the beep repeatedly. I ended up turning it back off because nothing was coming on the screen and the beeping was annoying.

I waited again for a about a minute to turn it on and this time it gave the normal one beep. But instead I get some little blue messege about "display recovery/check" it was something like that. Either way the computer would not turn on and all i got was either a complete black screen or that little blue messege. I know I should have writen that messege down, but i was so mad that i just turned the computer off and went to bed.

Today i tried one more time to turn it on, i wanted to at least check the system log. The computer turnes on ok (or so it seems) but it then freezes up on me. I can't even get to the system log to see what is wrong because it is freezing up on me before it compleatly boots up or before i can get the log to come up  .

It appears that I have a very big paper weight on my desk right now because thats about the only good use it can do right now. :( Um any more advise, because i have no clue what to do from here :( ?

Recently added: i was just curious if i should reinstall my Redhat again. If my ram went out like it did, could it have messed up some stuff and thats why I'm having so much trouble? I know that Memtest found like 30 plus errors and I know that can't be good :( The only thing i can think of doing now is reinstalling my OS. I will wait to do it incase someone has a better suggestion. At the moment I am still using my mother's computer because mine has decided to be a big paperweight that dosen't work

Thank you for any help,

Hi silvercat

Yes, a bad memory module could mess up stuff. That happened to me once and the file system on disk got badly messed up.

So, that could be part of your problem. Unfortunately, the beeping when you turn on your computer and the fact that it refuses to boot completely doesn't look good. :(

I don't want to be the one to give you this news, but your system seems to have some kind of fatal hardware failure. Try running the memtest floppy again. If the 256MB memory module is broken too, you could possibly have it replaced at a reasonable cost. Otherwise, it could be pretty much anything (expensive) that's broken. Motherboard, CPU, video card ...

The beeping when you turn on the machine is not random! If you have the manuals for the motherboard, it can tell you what the beep patterns mean. (Like if it's BEEP BEEP ---- BEEP BEEP then the memory is broken, if it's BEEP BEEP BEEP ---- BEEP BEEP BEEP then the video card is broken and so on.)

So sorry
Martin
