Ram 101
 

I am trying to determine how each MB of RAM is being used on my computers.

On one of my computers, TOP, PS and FREE often indicate 60MB RAM usage. When I add up the RAM process usage individually, they do not exceed 30MB RAM.
Same thing with my other computer, TOP, PS and FREE often indicate 105MB RAM usage. When I add the RAM process usage individually, they do not exceed 75MB RAM.

I'm using the stock kernel from Slackware 9.0 on each computer. Maybe the kernel RAM usage is about 30-40MB RAM and this makes up the "missing" RAM.

Is this "assessment" close to right?

Linux uses the RAM for buffer space so that porgrams can run faster, but, if an app neds this space linux will release it to the program. For more info, search for linux ram. FYI the kernel only uses ~2MB of RAM.
