quick question about startup

How can I configure the X server to start, run xterm and nothing else? What file will that affect? Thanks for your help.

Depends on how you invoke your session...
If you use startx, create a ~/xinitrc with
exec xterm
as the last line.
If you start it from a X login manager (kdm,
gdm, xdm ...) use ~/.xsession and do the
same.

Cheers,
Tink
