Quick Question

I just wanted to know how a Linux system is organized. Not where/why the files are located in a certain directory. But more along the lines of how the system knows whats on the computer (programs/libraries). M$ Winblows uses the registry, i just wanted to know if Linux has the same or the equivalent to it (multiple commands and what not), and how does it work?

Thank You,
A Dedicated Slackware user

how does window find registry?

i don't know the answer
but if you follow from the first line of windows code, you will see how windows os itself/ other apps find registry.. i guess

linux seem to store config info on various files
such as /etc/rc.d /etc/hosts /etc/ld.so.conf (library)
and linux look up files as needed.

i don't know more than this..

by the way, all the things os need which are not in file should be in memory
ld.so.conf info is also in memory i think.. since you have to do ldconfig after modifying it.

I think linux works through modules to find different application programs.
