Question concerning Aboriginal Linux as a base for a minimal distro

I was thinking of using Aboriginal Linux as a base for my i686 system and managing external software that won't be part of the core using something like NetBSD's pkgsource. The main reason that I want to use pkgsource is due to the fact that I want my external software to not have any dependency problems that precompiled binaries might bring. Whenever Aboriginal Linux updates, all I would need to do is recompile my other software.

From what I read so far, most people have been using Aboriginal Linux for development purposes; although, I did also read that it can be installed on hardware. This shouldn't be too hard for me to do since I already made a LFS system at one point, but I just want to make sure that what I plan on doing is possible before I commit to it. Has anyone else done what I was thinking so far?

Why not just use an already existing distro with the features you describe, like Gentoo. Its Portage system is quite similar to pksource and you can do upgrades without having to handle two different systems.

Mainly due to the fact that I prefer BSD-like Ports to the Portage system that Gentoo uses. For some strange reason, neither FreeBSD nor NetBSD install correctly on my i686 machine, but Linux installs fine. I basically want a system where the core userland is managed separately from the ports I install on my system just like it would be on *BSD.
