question about swap(memory)!!

hiiiii

coming straight to the question,,

as it is recommended tht whenever we do the installation we install RAM double the available RAM in system and we can check it by /proc/meminfo,,,

my system was showing me about 384924 KB and i changed it to MB giving me roughly 375 MB,, does tht mean i need to install 512 MB or more than tht,,,

well someone told me i use "confuse" word a lot soo,, i wont say i am confuse but yeh i am bit lost

thanks for ur help

There are no hard and fast "rules" about swap. It all depends on what you're going to use your system for. I rarely see more than about 375MB of memory in use on my system. I'm probably a typical home user - I use it mostly for web browsing, a game or two, spreadsheets, and simple wordprocessing. I also compile my own kernels. It won't hurt you to have 512MB of swap, unless it's not enough. I don't even know what programs you'd be running to use more than 887MB of RAM, unless it would be a mix of video rendering and RAM intensive stuff like that. But, if you're a typical user, you'll probably be just fine with 512MB swap.

Here is a link to TLDP with some pointers on the subject. I personally use a swap file equal to the amount of my physical memory for my home systems.
