question about backing up data

I recently learned how to use cp -urv to back only the files that have been modified since the last backup. But something I always wondered about this kind of backing up is, what do you do about files in the backup area that you have deleted on the main copy? If I don't want them on the main copy, I presumably don't want their backup copies either. If I wanted the space freed up, I wouldn't know how to get rid of them other than going into my backup hard drive and deleting them manually.

Have you tried 'rsync'?

Quoting the man page:

Quote:
I mirror a directory between my “old” and “new” ftp sites with the command:

rsync -az -e ssh --delete ~ftp/pub/samba nimbus:"~ftp/pub/tridge"
I'm assuming you backup to a foreign host, not to the same computer.

Hello,

You can use rsync with local and remote systems. You can rsync from one local disk to another.

Thanks!

Code:
rsync -a --del ~/tmp ~/tmp2
...or something like that.
