Query X resolution and Color depth

Is there a command I can use to Query the settings that X is currently using ?

I'd like to know Reolution, Color depth, and Horiz and Vertical Refresh rathes the system is currently using.

I have a system setup and I selected 1024x768 as the default resolution but looking at it there is no way it's runnign 1024x768, I'd like to know what it IS running at.. (probably 640x480)

I didn't see anything under /proc that looked promising, and I must be Searching with the wrong terms on LQ.org, and Google because I'm not finding anything..

Thanks !

You should be able to gleam this information from the "Screen" section of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. There should be a "Default Depth" type line (I'm not in front of my linux box right now), it's probably set to 16 or 24. Then scroll down to the section for depth 16 and look at the resolutions listed. The first one listed will be the default.

If you want to cycle through the resolutions, I believe you can just hit Ctrl+Shift+"plus(+)" (the plus key on the number pad)...

The Idea of cycling through the reolutions was a good one, it verified that I am only getting 2 of the 3 Resolutions I have set in the Xorg.conf file.

"1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

Quote:
(II) VESA(0): Total Memory: 32 64KB banks (2048kB)
(II) VESA(0): Generic Monitor: Using hsync range of 30.00-70.00 kHz
(II) VESA(0): Generic Monitor: Using vrefresh range of 50.00-160.00 Hz
(II) VESA(0): Not using mode "1024x768" (no mode of this name)
(--) VESA(0): Virtual size is 800x600 (pitch 800)
(**) VESA(0): *Built-in mode "800x600"
(**) VESA(0): *Built-in mode "640x480"
Might just be not enough memory on the video controller..

Confirmed 2 MB of Video memory is not enough to display at 1024x768 with 24 Bit color depth.. Switched Default depth to 16 Bit and I now get the higher resolution Display.

IT looks like 800x600 now, it still doesn't look like 1024x768 to me... Hrm..
XFCE4 Settings shows only options for 800x600 and 640x480 resolutions so I still don't think I'm getting the 1024x768..

I still wish there was a quick utility to display the current output of the video system..

Try xdpyinfo. It spits out a bunch of stuff, but I'm sure if I read the man page I could figure out how to trim that down to what you were interested in.

Well according to that I guess it IS running at 1024x768.. guess I'm just not used to the XFCE4 desktop and mybe that is why it looks funny to me Or maybe I am just spoiled and too used to running in 1600x1200..

Code:
screen #0:
  dimensions: 1024x768 pixels (260x195 millimeters)
  resolution: 100x100 dots per inch
  depths (7): 16, 1, 4, 8, 15, 24, 32
  root window id: 0x3e
depth of root window: 16 planes
number of colormaps: minimum 1, maximum 1
  default colormap: 0x20
default number of colormap cells: 64
preallocated pixels: black 0, white 65535
  options: backing-store NO, save-unders NO
  largest cursor: 1024x768
  current input event mask: 0x7a802c

  default visual id: 0x22
  visual:
    visual id: 0x22
    class: TrueColor
    depth: 16 planes
Thanks for the command that is what I was looking for.
