I'm trying to use putty, the ssh client for Windows to connect to various systems, but the keyboard is always messed up.
- I don't have root on the remote box
- UK keyboard layout
The problem keys are:
- home
- end
- all the F keys (these are the main ones left I can't get working)
- sometimes backspace
Naturally I've tried all the combinations of settings, xterm etc.

Even if I can get it working I'd like to know why; what xterm / vt100 etc means. I understand they're consoles but what's the difference and why am I having so much trouble?
For example what's the difference between vt100+ and vt400? What is actually sent to the terminal?
I sometimes have similar problems in linux -> linux connections.
I even sometimes have problems with consolemode, where the end key just types ~. Altering the keyboard mapping to uk doesn't help. Adding fixes to .login doesn't help either.
