Purpose of setting a soft limit ?


What is the purpose of setting a soft limit on a resource, it it can be raised. Is n't hard limit sufficcient ?

From my knowledge you want to set their quota at the soft limit level. Once they reach that it starts to warn them they are exceeding their quota, etc. The hard limit is there to just flat out deny anymore space taken to prevent them from using up more than they are allocated.
