Program Icon Location?

I've been working on a program and I'm pretty much finished with it. I want to install an icon for it, but I don't know where it should go.
This question may sound dumb, but I just want to do it the 'proper' way so that its not desktop environment dependent. I assume it should go somewhere in '/usr/share/icons/', but I don't know if this assumption IS correct and if it is, which of the folders in '/usr/share/icons/' should it be placed in?

Oh... also, what typical size should these be?

/usr/share/icons is generally for icon themes, for specific app icons I'm of the understanding they should be placed in /usr/share/pixmaps. You can supply a few sizes I think but 48x48 is a happy medium.
