Program dependancies

Hi

I have had a few programs which for whatever reason have not installed with the usual ./configure, make and install, some of which failed to install because of dependancies.

Is there a way to tell other than the readme etc what the programs dependancies are?

If it is not a dependancy (i'm sure ive seen a dep command somewhere), what else could it be and what are your opinions on how to find the quickest solution to getting an app running?

Thanks Rob

Well, if you're too lazy to read the README
just run ./configure ... it will (usually) tell you
what is missing ...

Cheers,
Tink

harsh as it may sound but if your installing from source the best bet if you don't know off hand is to take whatever libblahblah missing or whatever's name and first plug the dpendency name into freshmeat.net search then sourceforge.net (with a wee bit of creativity to the name if it don't pick up) then google if all else fails. Sure, yah, alot of source doesn't list it's dependencies outright in any file for you to read. Took me a good few attempts to find libdvdcss at videolan.org.

i say jsut sue google first as its more likly to find pieces of a program and tell you the program name more better (yea it sucks what people dont tell you somthing is required in a readme file, iv been thru a lota dependecy finding and google never let me down (just kept me up )
