proftpd configuration n00bness!

Hey all,

I'm trying to move my FTP server from windows-based to linux-based and I'm almost there! ... I just need to figure out this syntax dealy with ProFTPD's configuration. I have little clue about valid tags and code I can use in the configuration file. I've looked through the example-configurations directory and thought, 'well ... that's nice ... ' but I want to be able to write my own configuration from scratch. But I don't know no codes, lol. Is there a reference out there for this? I've looked and didn't find anything.

I've also looked into gProFTPD but I couldn't get the thing to work. It might even be an X program, is it? I'm running a text-based red hat system right now and I can't do X stuff. I can't - I'm running a 200 Mhz system with 32MB RAM, and I don't want to - with those specs if I was even able to run X, it would make a crappy server.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!!

Max

PS - on a scale from 1 to 10 on how n00bish I am at linux I'd say 2.5.

You can find the ProFTPd documentation here. Starting with a working config that at least partly resembles the config you wish wouldn't be a bad idea though: This is open source - we use what's there already and improve it.

aha! I found just what I was looking for (finally) ...

Now I'm gonna get down, write a configuration file, and swap platforms.

-edit- I'm starting to get the hang of it now! The configuration is just like HTML with different commands. I think I know what to do now, but if I need help, I'll give ya'll a holler

Hey I am struggling slightly, could anyone help me configure this server for a moment? You don't need to actually type out the configuration file for me, just the casual know-how. I have the hang of it, I just need a little advice and I'm off. And maybe a little help with adding users and chroot() stuff, I don't really get that too well.

Basically, here's how the windows server is running right now. There are many users, about 25 right now, and they each have their own private home directory. They have complete access to their own directory. And they also have an optional /pub directory they can add to allow anonymous users to access data there. When logged in as their account, their home directory lies in the root of the url, ftp://osrv.serveftp.com. Anonymous users can view their [user]'s pub directory in the form of ftp://osrv.serveftp.com/[user]. In the home directory (also the root of the url), they can list everybody's username, except for the users that didn't create a /pub directory. And of coarse, anonymous users have read-only access to everything available to them.

I need to write up a configuration file to be able to do this ... a full writeout of the file would be absolutely wonderful but if you would like to say a few pointers, that's just what I need. Thank you all very much!!

Now that I'm getting into it - do I have to create users on my box for ftp users? And do I have to chmod the users' directories so that their user allows them to acces the specified files? I _think_ this is how this works, but I'm not totally sure.

With ProFTPd yes, you need to create users on the box in order for them to access it, unless you use anonymous login (not recommended). You can set their shell to /bin/false and set "RequireValidShell" to "no" in your proftpd.conf to make it impossible for them to log in (using SSH or locally) but still use the FTP server.

Another solution would be using glftpd, which is incredibly configurable and it keeps its own set of users and passwords so it doesn't mess with "real" system users.
