/proc/


Under the /proc/ many files are named using numbers like 1,10,1099,.......Why is it so?

Because they are PIDs.

example:

$ ls -l /proc/$(pgrep firefox)/exe
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 user group 0 2010-06-15 07:44 /proc/5633/exe -> /usr/lib64/firefox-3.5/firefox
