Problems with mounting partitions

"mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mntpt" gives an error
"invalid major and minor numbers". Has anyone had this problem?
It's SuSE.
Thanks,

not too familiar with suse.. but should the /mnt directory be mounted to a specific directory like...

mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/windows

or were you referring to the mount point location you have for it. and is this a win98 partition, or nt.. ?? what os is it and how was the filesystem formatted?

mounting nightmares!

aint suse great?

ok... first as root:
> mkdir /mnt/windows
this is going to create for us a directory that we can "put", if you will, all of our windows data..

next...
as root again:

>mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/windows

now, what this does is "mount" (all file systems, as you may know by know are actually mounted instead of just browsed). The -t is for "type" of file system. Bingo...vfat is the generic file system type for a windows partition. Then, /dev/ is device and /hda1 is your first hard drive's first partition. Unless you have a 3rd party boot software like partition magic, windows' c: drive will always be hda1 (or sda1 if it is a scsi!). And-- you guessed it.../mnt/windows was the directory, our basket if you indulge me, for windows data.

from this directory you will be able to see all that good ol' windows info... good luck!

Well, even though I eventually fixed the problem, I am not convinced why I had problems with mounting..

Thnx to both philfighter and trickykid.

Let me explain the problem..

I have both RH and SuSE installed, coexisting with 98, NT. For SuSE, i installed the lilo on / and eventually lost the bootfloppy. SInce then, I used the RH boot floppy to start SuSE using 'Linux root=/dev/hda8". SuSE booted properly, or at least it seemed that way. But under such boot, I was not able to mount any partitions, not just fat, but also ext2, using any methods like mount -t vfat /d.... .. etc. I was trying to create a LILO and boot foppy for SuSE. I needed to mount fat partition because the documentation was on that partition.

How I fixed it : In RH just copied the docs from windows to suse partition, and then logged into suse as single and fixed the problem.

But I am not convinced that I can't mount a partition in SuSE if I boot it using RH lilo.
