Problems with gXine

I'm using the latest stable version of Xine and gXine.
When I try to play something it works fine - but if I use the slider bar to try to skip to a later part of the file gXine freezes. When gXine starts I get the following errors:

(gxine:26007): libgnomevfs-WARNING **: Internal error: the configuration system was not initialized. Did you call _gnome_vfs_configuration_init?

(gxine:26007): GLib-CRITICAL **: file ghash.c: line 225 (g_hash_table_lookup): assertion `hash_table != NULL' failed

It repeats both of those errors 3 times, but everything is the same in them.
The same thing happens when I either pause and unpause gXine, or when I minimize it and bring it back up.

And when I play a file I get this:
(gxine:26152): libgnomevfs-WARNING **: Internal error: the configuration system was not initialized. Did you call _gnome_vfs_configuration_init?
audio_arts_out: ao_open bits=16 rate=44100, mode=8
audio_arts_out: 2 channels output
audio_arts_out : latency 626 ms

These files are pretty big (600mb - 1 gb), but they did work fine when playing in Windows 2000. I've also tried many different files all using different codecs, and the problems still occured.
My computer is a 550mhz P3 with 300mb RAM, running RH 9.

Is this an issue with xine, or is my computer not fast enough to play them?
And do you have any idea how to fix it?
Thanks!

I just tried starting the "normal" xine (the xine command instead of the gxine command) and when I start it I get the following errors, and then the program exits:

load_plugins: audio output plugin /usr/lib/xine/plugins/xineplug_ao_out_alsa.so failed to link: libasound.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
audio_oss_out: Opening audio device...
audio_oss_out: using device >/dev/dsp<
audio_oss_out: opening audio device /dev/dsp failed:
Device or resource busy
load_plugins: audio output plugin /usr/lib/xine/plugins/xineplug_ao_out_oss.so: init_audio_out_plugin failed.
main: the specified audio driver 'oss' failed
