problems with CUDA 3.0 64 bit install, drivers and SDK

I did a search on CUDA and didn't see anything in these forums.

I am familiar with what Nvidia have on their sites but I haven't got it to work. I am a Linux newbie with some experience using a system through ssh. I have tried on Ubuntu and Xubuntu built using the handy Windows installer ( I have Win 7) and put *buntu on its own drive.

No problem downloading the .run files from Nvidia. The Cuda video drivers need a real root user and they won't install in X11. At least when you are not root or are in X11 you get an error msg. I now can make a real root user with

sudo -i
sudo password root

I have restarted into recovery mode and taken the "root shell" option. The Nvideo CUDA driver installer gives an error saying wrong level and to use telnet 3. After that the installer goes further but says its script has failed, continue yes/no? The build fails on yes requiring a hardware reset. Well, the installer is for ubuntu 9.04 and I have 10.4.

The SDK problem is that the build fails with gcc4. I imagine that is a lesser problem and there is either a way to have gcc3 also on a system in a separate directory and then change the makefile, or to fix the source code.

Has someone got CUDA 3.0 64 bit working on any free Linux? Well, I can't get Fedora 12 to install - I get the "no driver found" error which is probably not unexpected as my system is brand new with the latest hardware.

Any help would be much appreciated.

EDIT: Well, I think I will give up for now and continue on with Win 7 on my home system with ssh to a working Fedora system. I'm sorry to say I am not overly impressed with Ubuntu or Xubuntu but the Windows installer is fast and handy and the uninstall is clean.
