Problems with apm and acpi

I've searched various threads on ACPI and APM, but so far haven't found anything that's helped me.

Okay, so prior to today, I've been running Slack 9 on my Inspiron 8200 with a 2.4.20 kernel and apm loaded as a module. The suspend function seemed to work pretty well, but the standby function either wouldn't do anything, or it would appear to go to sleep, but would not wake up at all with keystrokes/mouseclicks/etc. I tried with both the A06 BIOS that was on it, and upgraded to A11 bios. Same trouble

So today I took the plunge and compiled myself a 2.6.5 kernel with ACPI support to see if I'd have better luck with it. Unfortunately, now neither suspend nor sleep appear to work properly. If I do:

echo 1 > /proc/apci/sleep

the screen clears and then prints the following:

Stopping tasks: ============================ |
orinoco_lock() called with hw_unavailable (dev=d754c800)
PM: Entering state

And this is how it stays, screen lit up with those messages, and no response to keystrokes/clicks, whatever.

echo 3 > /proc/apci/sleep

gives the same messages but does in fact then power down the display etc. It seems to wake up from suspend when I push the power button (as expected), although I have to manually toggle the Fn-F7 LCD button. THe trouble is that the X display is completely hosed. Just tried it from a console. And then switched to X (which was hosed) but then could not switch back to the console at all. Had to hard reboot.

On a related note, I also compiled the 2.6.5 kernel with apm available as a module in case acpi didn't work. However, if I try to modprobe it I get:

FATAL: Error inserting apm (/lib/modules/2.6.5/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/apm.ko)

The apm.ko file exists. Can I not load apm as a module if ACPI is compiled in (don't think ACPI as a module was an option).

I wouldn't really have a problem with re-compiling me kernel back to just apm if I could get the wake from sleep to work properly, but since it doesn't seem to work in ACPI either, I'm not confident

Any help/suggestions would be MUCH appreciated.

Cheers,

Dave

You can have both options in your kernel, but you can use only one at a time. If both are available, ACPI us used by default, but the are mutually exclusive. That's why the kernel refuses to load the APM module. Use the kernel option "acpi=off" to turn off ACPI at boot, then APM will be used instead. If you have ACPI compiled as modules, then unloading it could work too.

ACPI and suspending is a little tricky. Have a look at http://www.php.co.ba/X31/#acpi , it worked for me.
