Problems installing debian on usb, broken packages, repositories not responding.

Yes, I just installed debian etch, it works fine offline, but I want gdm to start, and I want to bring it everywhere I go, so I don't have to bare using windows at school. It seems that apt is being stubborn, i've tried to install elinks on etch, wierd thing is, it doesn't seem to know the package exists, I also did apt-get update so it would refresh, it got all the packages from the repositories, and I enabled it do download from the repositories. I'm pretty confused I'll tell you!
